Indoor climate & allergy season - natural stones are healers
Less sneezing, more life: Why natural stone tables are ideal for allergy sufferers
And what all this has to do with mites, indoor air, and healthy living.
When the first sneeze in the morning competes with the alarm clock ringing, it's a sign for many people: allergy season—or rather, everyday life filled with allergies—is here. But what many underestimate is that pollen and irritants aren't just lurking outside. It's often the home itself that harbors the biggest allergy triggers. The good news? If you pay careful attention to materials when furnishing, you can transform your home into a small oasis of relief. And that's where natural stone comes in—elegant, durable, and amazingly health-promoting.
What are mites – and why are so many people allergic to them?
House dust mites are tiny arachnids—only about 0.1 to 0.5 millimeters in size—and invisible to the naked eye. They live primarily in warm, humid, and cozy places: in beds, carpets, upholstery, curtains—and yes, sometimes even on table surfaces, if the material allows it.
The problem: It's not the mite itself that's the allergen, but its feces. These dries out, breaks down into microscopic particles, and are stirred up when vacuuming or airing out – directly into our respiratory tract. Those allergic to mite feces suffer from symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, skin rashes, or even asthma attacks.
And this is exactly where the choice of materials in our home becomes a decisive factor.
Natural stone tables: an uninhabitable place for mites
Natural stone has an incredibly dense structure. Unlike wood or textile surfaces, it offers no refuge or food for mites. They can neither nest nor leave their mark on a smoothly ground or polished stone table. Even open-pored stones like travertine can be treated to prevent mites from penetrating – with natural impregnations that maintain breathability while preventing particles from penetrating.
The effect: fewer mites, fewer allergens – and a noticeably more comfortable living environment.
Allergies do not occur by chance – our environment plays a major role
Allergies are overreactions of the immune system. The body mistakenly identifies otherwise harmless substances—such as mite excrement, pollen, or pet hair—as dangerous and launches a defensive reaction. This reaction is triggered not only by the allergen itself, but also by what scientists call "environmental pollution": a combination of poor air quality, chemical fumes, and prolonged contact with irritating materials.
And this is precisely where the major influence of our furnishings lies: Furniture made of varnished wood, plastics, or glued panels can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which place additional strain on the mucous membranes.
These chemicals act as accelerants for allergic reactions – even when the original trigger is only present in small amounts.
Natural stone: The silent helper for a clean indoor climate
A natural stone table brings tranquility to this system. It's VOC-free, antistatic (meaning it attracts little dust), and easy to clean – without the need for harsh cleaning agents. This makes it the ideal piece of furniture for anyone who wants to live consciously – whether out of consideration for their own health, their family, or the environment.
Another advantage: The cool, solid surface of the stone has a positive effect on the indoor climate. It doesn't retain moisture, has a temperature-regulating effect, and thus also reduces the growth of mold – another often overlooked allergy trigger.
Healthy living begins with the right materials
When we talk about how we want to live, it's not just about style and aesthetics – it's also about health, well-being and long-term quality of life.
A natural stone table isn't a miracle cure, but it provides a solid foundation. It's immune to mites and irritants (like synthetic materials), and it exudes a sense of calm that permeates the entire room.
For allergy sufferers, this is a real gift – and for everyone else, a statement for mindful, nature-oriented living.
A table from the MAGNA Atelier is therefore not only an aesthetic focal point of the room, but also a true piece of healthy living.
In our factory in Saxony-Anhalt, we create natural stone tables that combine the highest quality craftsmanship with a healthy selection of materials – individually crafted, durable, and free from chemical additives.
For everyone who wants to live not only more beautifully but also healthily.
